Services are targeted to address the needs of individuals with co-occurring disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), deaf or hard of hearing, HIV/AIDS, and mental illness. CaringWorks New Beginning Recovery provides one-of-a-kind supportive housing for homeless men or men facing homelessness in metro Atlanta. Each year more than 130 clients call New Beginning Recovery home while they move through their journey of recovery. The alumni of New Beginning Recovery and other clients we serve find more than their sobriety. They learn new skills, develop reliable sources of income, and create a healthy social network to support their future dreams.
What Makes New Beginning Recovery Different?
We recently added another home to our campus, allowing us to house 19 families in need of emergency shelter. When asked about the future, Steven said, “I plan on going back to school. In a few weeks I will be getting my Peer Education Certification actually. I would like to continue working on my speech so I can fix the damage from my stroke. Eventually I want to open my own treatment program for people affected by HIV/substance abuse.
I would also like to chair meetings at N.A., which is something I started doing at New Beginning Recovery before my stroke. At the age of 16, he revealed his sexuality to his mother and she made him leave the house. He was already abusing substances and that led to a 25 year journey of homelessness. While washing dishes and with housing help from his aunt, he obtained an apartment. However, the pressure of keeping up with rent and a life of drugs and “partying” ultimately led to bouts New Beginning Recovery of homelessness and a positive HIV diagnosis in 2014.

Young adults can apply online to live at the facility, Muñoz said, but people under the age of 18 can come to the door any time and receive resources and a bed, depending on availability. The two wings – one for young adults and one for youth – will be completely separate. There will be separate staffs, separate spaces and separate amenities to preserve security and safety and give the young people individual attention, Muñoz said. Sylvia Muñoz, director of shelters at Rod’s House, said case managers, behavioral health specialists and other educational resources will be on hand at the shelter, which will also have food, Wi-Fi and other amenities. Last year, Loisann’s New Beginning Recovery served 398 clients, including 230 children. Already this year we are on track to surpass these numbers, and as the need has grown, so has Loisann’s New Beginning Recovery.

New Beginning Recovery’s mission is to break the cycle of domestic violence by providing safe refuge and supportive services that educate and empower those impacted by domestic violence. Some beds are reserved for emergency housing, however, the majority are dedicated to men who are rebuilding their lives through CaringWorks’ residential treatment and transitional housing programs. Soon, teenagers facing homelessness and housing insecurity will be able to walk up to a newly built shelter in East Yakima, knock on a door and receive resources, support and care.
